Choosing the right colours for your signage can make or break a design. The colour of your sign has a strong impact on consumers as it increases brand recognition. When you’re designing your logo and brand image overall, its important that you have a strong understanding of colour theory.

Keep reading for attributes to consider when choosing the colours of your sign!

Warm and Cool Colours

The colours you select define the feeling and perceptions you want your customer to have when they visualize your sign. Using warm colours such as red, orange and yellow are recognized as energizing, happy, passionate and exciting colours. However, cool colours including blue, green and purple are calming, subtle and soothing. Avoid combining warm and cool colours as they both indicate different meanings.

Consider a Colour Palette

In order to ensure a cohesive design, restrict yourself to only a few colours to effectively create brand recognition though visual communication. Align your palette with colour theory principles by deciding on specific colours that align with your company’s brand and values. To create a visually appealing sign, include a base colour for the background and an accent colour in the foreground.

Contrast Colours and Colour Schemes

Make your sign pop by using dark colours on a light background or light colours on a dark background to enhance your sign and make it easier to read. Consider using a monochromatic colour scheme, especially if you only want your logo to include a single colour. Monochromatic colour schemes create a feeling of simplicity and harmony and look beautiful when paired together. If you’re interested in using more than one colour, consider an analogous colour scheme. Analogous colour schemes consist of 3 colours placed next to each other on the colour wheel. For the most effective outcome, make one colour the most dominant and allow the other 2 to be accent colours. Choosing an analogous colour scheme will make the colour of your signage look rich!
